The City Attorney advised he would research this matter and
report back.

Councilmember Mercer asked that the City Council support having the Traffic
Engineering staff review stop signs on Valley at Greenwood, Greenwood up and
do~ that street, including Foxswallow and then continue to the grammer school.
Mayor Brandes concurred. Staff stated that a report could be ready for presenta-
tion at the first meeting in August.

CITY COUNCIL COMt{ITTEE REPORTS
Councilmembers presented various Committee Reports for the information of the
Council.

MEETING OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
Mr. Robert Pearson, 3590 Churchill Court, spoke to concerns of approximately
250 children walking 2.4 - 3~ miles to school as there is a very likely possibility
~--- there will be no school busses from Pleasanton Meadows to the school when school
starts in September. Mr. Pearson presented visual aids and addressed what could
be done now, in the near future, and after that time to alleviate the problem. He
suggested that the $1,000,000 earmarked for the Railroad Track Consolidation Pro-
ject would more properly serve the good health and safety of the children going to
school to improve part of Santa Rita Road between the school and Pleasanton Meadows.
Mr. Pearson stated he conducted a brief study of vehicles parked on the street and
stated that perhaps tow-away zones during certain hours would be helpful. Mr.
Pearson presented a s, rmm_ary which he read to the audience as follows:

"We have outlined a course of action which we think will give our
children a reasonably safe route to school this fall. The million dollars
that the city has saved over the past few years has come from the people
of our city.--It has been saved by turning off street lights, which many
people are now paying for out of their own pockets.---It has been saved by
not maintaining our streets as they should be.---It has been saved by not
weeding our median strips as they should be.--- and it has been saved in
many ways to numerous to mention here. The point is that this is our money
and we are asking you to consider the safety of our children when you spend
it. We are not asking you to drop the Railroad Project, but we place the
safety of our children above the benefits that a few people will derive from
the present Railroad Project.

"We would urge you to do the following:

1. Budget the completion of Santa Rita Road and do it tonight.

2.Instruct the staff that the completion of Santa Rita Road is their
No. 1 priority.

2. 6/26/79
