No action was required or taken by Council <br /> on this item. <br /> <br />REPORTS OF THE CiTY II~NAGER <br />Chamber of Co.m~.erce .~eri.ta~.e Days Bicycle Races and Parade Permit Applications <br /> Mr. Walker presented the report of the Assistant to the City Manager dated <br />August 18, 1980, regarding this matter. <br /> <br /> Ms. Debra Strong, Executive Manager of the Chamber of Commerce, explained the <br />Heritage Days Parade had become an annual event and that this year a sanctioned <br />bicycle race was also being held, at the suggestion of one of the Chamber's members- <br />California Peddlers. Ms. Strong stated that in recent discussions with City staff <br />and the Police Department there was no mention of costs involved. She stated the <br />Chamber is on a limited budget and she requested the City to co-sponsor this event <br />and to incur the expenses. Ms. Strong advised that Chamber members and ~lso members <br />of the Bicycle Club could assist the Police Department. She stated that after dis- <br />cussion with the Bicycle Club it was felt that only one ambulance would be necessary <br />for standby at this event. She stated that the Chamber could not place paid ads in <br />the newl~apers regarding the event and advising that the streets in the bicycle route <br />area will be closed. <br /> <br /> After discussion regarding these condition, it was moved by Councilmember Wood <br />to amend the conditions to require only one standby ambulance, to try to get more <br />off-street parking, and to'request the local newspapers to publicize this event. <br /> <br /> The motion died for lack of a second. <br /> <br /> Mr. Tim Piper, California Peddlers, explained that the bicycle race would be a <br />santioned race, there would be approximately 100-115 participants, there would be <br />an entry fee to cover costs incurred, and that there would be various classifica- <br />tions of racers. He stated that his group had never before been required to have <br />an ambulance on standby; that the Red Cross has always provided any first aid that <br />was necessary. <br /> <br /> Councilmember Mohr expressed concern regarding the City financing a sanctioned <br />bicycle race. <br /> <br /> Mayor Mercer stated he felt there would be many benefits to having such an <br />event in the City. <br /> <br /> Mr. Walker emphasized that residents living on the bicycle race route would be <br />virtually shut off from their homes for about a 7-hour period. <br /> <br /> 8. 8/26/80 <br /> <br /> <br />
