Mr. Butler agreed with the requirement for the Class A
protection rating in the hazard areas and supported the Class A
wood product roof for replacement. He did not agree with the
complete ban on new wood roofs. Council made a big improvement
when the ordinance was changed four to five years ago and felt that
Counicl could take another step by requiring that new wood roofs
should be required to be Class B rather than Class C.

Mayor Mercer stated that it was prudent for Council to protect
the citizens'the best it could and for a nominal amount of money,
it could require Class B. He indicated that one can still re-shake
a roof, but just with a higher fire retardant material. He
supported the banning of wood products on new construction because
most of that construction is not built in downtown or near fire
stations.

Ms. Mohr stated that this does not seem to be much different
than Title 20 which requires double glazed glass for better
insulation. She supported the staff recommendation.

Chief Withers added that there are also environmental issues.
Shakes take trees from the forests and when they are dumped in
landfills, cedar does not deteriorate. Concrete and other
substitute materials can be recycled.

It was moved by Ms. Mohr, and seconded by Mr. Tarver, that
Ordinance No. 1542 be introduced, to be read by title only and
waiving further reading thereof, amending Ordinance No. 1432 and
amending Section 20.08.045 of the Pleasanton Municipal Code,
requiring the use of fire retardant roof covering materials within
the City of Pleasanton.

The roll call vote was as follows:
AYES: Councilmembers Mohr, Scribner, Tarver, and Mayor Mercer
NOES: Councilmember Butler
ABSENT: None
ABSTAIN: None

Item ~
GP-91-5, Southern Pacific Railroad Riqht-of-WaV Liqht Rail General
Plan Amendment.
