80

Item 6c
AP-92-16/Z-92-178, Sell-U-Car (Dave McDouqa11)
Appeal by City Council of a decision of the Design Review Board
~pprovinq an application to modify a previous condition of approval
~o allow a temporarypylon signto be retained as a permanent
and to change the wordin~ on the existinq pylon sign from "Avis Car
~ales" to "Sell-U-Car" Sales, located at 4390 Rosewood Drive.
Zoninq for the property is C-S (Commercial) District (SR92:410)

Mr. Mercer declared the public hearing open on the
application.

Dave McDougall, 4390 Rosewood Drive, owner of Sell-U-Car,
indicated he agreed with the staff report and felt the sign was
consistent with existing signs in the neighborhoods. He stated it
was important for him to have freeway exposure and urged Council to
approve the application.

Mr. Tarver inquired about the number of permanent pylon signs
which had been approved. Mr. Swift responded that of this type or
height there were approximately eight. This is the only business
without direct freeway frontage.

Ms. Mohr inquired if the landscape to be installed would make
this sign no longer visible from the freeway. Mr. Swift believed
it will not be visible except from the high point of the old
Southern Pacific overpass. The landscaping will not be installed
until the freeway is widened after BART is completed to the site.

There being no further testimony, Mr. Mercer declared the
public hearing closed.

Mr. Tarver indicated if there were that many permanent pylon
signs then this is a dead issue.

Ms. Mohr indicated when Council considered adding a couple
more names to a sign nearby, it would have been a good time to
review the signage for the area in the long term. If Council feels
this should be reconsidered, she would be happy to hear so.

Mr. Mercer indicated that changing the name on the sign would
help the business in this bad economic time. Council should do
what it can to help retain existing businesses.

10/6/92
