' lfr SUN-DIAMOND GROWER5
OF CALIFORNIA

September 21, 1993

The Honorable Ben Tarver and Honorable
City Council Members
City of Pleasanton
P. O. Box 520
Pleasanton, California 94566

Dear Mayor Tarver and City Council Members:

As a representative of the business community, I want to
sensitize the City of Pleasanton to some of the challenges
which today's organizations face regarding employees and
housing.

Sun-Diamond Growers is a Fortune 500 Company located on
Gibraltar Drive within the Hacienda Business Park. Our
company relocated to Pleasanton from San Ramon in March of
1986. This Sales and Distribution Division has annualized
sales of approximately $650 million with 125 employees.

Since Sun-Diamond relocated to Pleasanton, the challenges of
Human Resource Management has significantly changed. The
motivators within the workforce now focus on "quality of
life" issues. Employees want a short commute to work and
have the American dream of owning their own home.

Within the Sun-Diamond workforce, 30% of the employees are
single, 53% of the workforce is non-management earning an
average of low-to-mid $20's. Currently, 20% of the Sun-
Diamond workforce live more than 40 miles from our office.
Since many of our employees cannot afford housing in this
community, I am faced with the challenge of having employees
commute from as far away as Modesto. When someone lives
that far from Sun-Diamond, there is the increased likelihood
of that individual finding employment closer to home. In
addition, the employee has already traveled for one hour
before even arriving at work.

In order to attract and retain qualified employees, it is
imperative that there be adequate, affordable housing within
the Pleasanton area (such as the 52-acre housing project
within Hacienda). The City cannot expect to attract

DIAMOND WALNUTS SUN-MAID RAISINS SUNSWEET PRUNES VALLEY FIG

P.o.
