-- Ms. Ayala referred to Tom Gill's letter of October 14, where it talked about the West
Las Positas Advisory Committee conducting a license plate survey.

Mr. Lum said he had some information on the survey. He said basically the committee
stood on different corners and counted the license plates at different intervals and compared how
much of the traffic continued up Muirwood and other routes. It is much easier to do in a
neighborhood rather than city-wide.

Mayor Tarver said unless there is a significant cost, he would like studies done for First
Street, Sunol Boulevard, Valley Avenue and Stoneridge Drive. Also look at the State
information if available and bring the information back at a later date.

Ms. Dennis said she was concerned about studying incidents. People cannot foresee
accidents to avoid them, so the number of cars getting off the freeway would not be accurate.

Mayor Tarver said commuters know when there are accidents and try to take alternate
routes.

Ms. Ayala asked if it would be beneficial to study only one segment.

Mr. Pico felt all the segments needed to be studied during the a.m. and p.m. peak hours.

Mr. van Gelder clarified that Stoneridge and First would be studied if under $10,000 but
if over that amount, then staff would bring it back to Council for approval.

Ms. Michelotti asked when the auxiliary lanes would be completed for 1-580.

Mr. van Gelder said the auxiliary lanes are in the model.

There was a break at' 9:10 p.m.

The meeting re, convened at 9:18 p.m.

Pleasanton City Council 10/21/97
Minutes 13
