CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PLEASANTON <br /> <br /> ALAMEDA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA <br /> <br /> RESOLUTION NO. 89-111 <br /> <br /> ARESOLUTION BANNING THEUSE OF ANY SEMI- <br /> AUTOMATIC ASSAULT RIFLES CAPABLE OF <br /> RECEIVING A MAGAZINE GREATER THAN FIVE <br /> ROUNDS IN CAPACITY <br /> <br />WHEREAS, assault rifles, such as the Uzi and AK-47, are <br /> manufactured for one purpose: to kill people in <br /> war; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, these instruments of war are proliferating in the <br /> streets of California and are used by street gangs <br /> and drug traffickers against innocent citizens <br /> including police officers; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, immense, rapid and high speed velocity firepower <br /> pose an indisputable and significant health and <br /> safety issue in this country and in California; <br /> and <br /> <br />WHEREAS this City Council does not recognize as legitimate <br /> sporting weapons any semi-automatic assault rifle <br /> capable of receiving a magazine greater than five <br /> rounds in capacity; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, there is no legitimate reason for citizens in an <br /> ordered and civilized society to possess operable <br /> weapons of such destructive potential; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, semi-automatic assault rifles are so easily <br /> obtainable through legal and illegal channels, yet <br /> are characterized by uncontrolled fire; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, there is no compelling rationale in favor of the <br /> best public interest in attempts to characterize <br /> these weapons of war as "sporting" or "collector <br /> oriented" in nature; <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PLEASANTON <br />RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS: <br /> <br />Section 1: The City of Pleasanton does hereby join with the <br /> California Police Chiefs in supporting a ban on <br /> assault rifles and additional legislation to limit <br /> the maximum capacity for magazines to five rounds. <br /> <br />Section 2: This resolution shall become effective <br /> immediately upon its passage and adoption. <br /> <br /> <br />
