BROWN AND CALDWELL ~
CONSULTING ENGINEERS

September 29, 1988

Mr. Joseph Eli iott
Director of Public Works and Utilities
City of Pleasanton
200 Old Bernal Avenue 11-3826-01/1
Pleasanton, California 94566-0802 11-3826-01/6

Subject: Special Engineering Services No. 3 for
Supplementary Subsurface Investigation
on Del Valle Parkway; Contract for
Consultant Services, Preliminary Design
Phase of Cross-Town Sanitary Sewer Interceptor

Dear Mr. Elliott:

As directed by Mr. Garry E. Lee on August 29, 1988, a supplementary
subsurface investigation will be conducted near 4455 Del Valle
Parkway for the Cross-Town Sanitary Sewer Interceptor.

Mr. Lee has informed us that, according to the pastor of Valley
Community Church at 4455 Del Valle Parkway, considerable difficulty
was encountered in completing the excavation for the church bell
tower because of "running" gravel and sand which has been
interpreted as marking the location of an old stream bed. The test
borings that our geotechnical consultant, Berlogar Geotechnical
Consultants, drilled for the original geotechnical investigation,
as described in the report of May 6, 1988, bracket the area in
question, and no indications of an old stream channel were
disclosed at those locations.

To determine whether, in fact, adverse subsurface conditions
possibly associated with an old stream channel exist at the church
site, Berlogar has proposed to drill one additional test hole on
the centerline of the proposed interceptor route and directly
opposite the church bell tower. Berlogar Geotechnical Consultants'
field engineer will log the boring and will recover relatively
undisturbed soil samples. If deemed necessary, laboratory testing,
including moisture content and dry unit weight determinations, will
be performed.

Following completion of the field exploration and any necessary
laboratory testing programs, Berlogar Geotechnical Consultants will
issue a supplementary report describing the subsurface conditions
encountered; their impact upon the design, construction and
performance of the interceptor; and special recommendations, if
appropriate, beyond those stated in the original report~-

28 1988
MAILING: POST OFFICE BOX 8045 WALNUT CREEK, CALIFORNIA 94596-1220
STREET,' 3480 BUSKIRK AVENUE PLEASANT HILL, CAL|FORNIA 94523-4342 · (415) 937-9010 · FAX: (415) 937-9026 PLEASANTON
ENGINEERING DEPT.
