Mr. Steve Bocian March 29, 1989
Page 3

* Bookleqger Project

The Commission also discussed-the Booklegger Project which would
recruit and train volunteers to take books to all elementary school
classes in Pleasanton. The goal of this Project is to introduce the
joys of reading for pleasure. Alameda County Library developed this
Project with a special federal grant in conjunction with the Fremont
School District.

Cost for the Project is about $50,000 which funds a half-time
coordinator and clerical support plus added copies of the books
promoted by the Bookleggers (about $10,000 of the Project amount).

In addition, the City Council could choose to pay for added copies of
these same books for the school libraries. These costs would range
from $13,570 to $27,140 depending on the number of books bought for
each school. Perhaps the School District might choose to buy these
books.

The Pleasanton Library Advisory Commission recognizes that the
Booklegger Project is more expensive, but hopes the Council will
consider the great benefit to school children in Pleasanton. This
Project funding should be considered short-term: special funding for
the Fremont 8ooklegger Project ended after two years and the Project
still continues three years later.

While school district personnel are interested in the Project, more
coordination than has thus far happened would be necessary to implement
this Project.

We can arrange for a special demonstration of this Project at the
Council's convenience.

If you would like more details on our estimates or proposals, please give me a
call.

Please let me know the dates for the Pleasanton budget hearings. I will plan
to attend. Members of the Pleasanton Library Advisory Commission will also
attend and can speak about their recommendations.

Very truly yours,

"n~iL Cooper
Alameda County Librarian

GC:JC:ej
Attachment: Contract for Added Hours only
cc Robert Eo Butler, Alameda County Library Advisory Commissioner
Don Nunes, Pleasanton Branch Manager
Pleasanton Library Advisory Commissioners
0855L
