City of Pleasanton

REPO T

June 6, 1989
Fire Department

SUBJECT: Adoption of a Resolution to Establish a Fire
Safety Self-inspection Program for Certain
Smaller Business Occupancies as Defined
Herein.

SUBJECT: Over the last three years the frequency of fire and
life safety inspections conducted by the fire
companies has increased from once a year to once
every one and one-half years. The department
inspectors have also not been able to meet the
challenge presented by the ever changing number of
commercial and industrial occupancies entering the
city system. A self-inspection program will allow
the department to direct its attention to areas
where the potential for life and property losses
are the greatest and yet assure that the smaller
occupancies in the community can have routine
inspections with the least amount of inconvenience.

STAFF RECOMMENDATION:

(1) Staff recommends that Council adopt this
resolution to establish a self-inspection program.

Honorable Mayor and Members of the Council

BACKGROUND

In 1960 the city established a fire department by appointing the
first paid member, Chief Jon Frudden. Five years later additional
paid staff members were added. In 1974 an inspection program was
developed and implemented to inspect all con~nercial occupancies
within the jurisdiction. From 1974 to present our community,
gradually shifted from that of a bedroom community with few
commercial occupancies to one of the fastest growing communities
in the state. Much of the growth occurred in the commercial area.
