MATTERS INITIATED BY COMMISSION D'IEMBERS
A. Commissioner Jamieson brought up discussion on the Del Valle Parkway.
He said he had talked to many homeowners on that street and almost to a person
they expressed a preference for a frontage road. Deputy City Attorney Levine
stated that the homeowners could bring suit to have the plan revised. Also,
the parkway design could be changed by the City Council.
Chairman Butler felt that any new home owner on the street should somehow be
made aware of the design of the parkway as presently approved.
Councilmember Mercer stated that he had voted against the parkway. But it
is his belief that the homeowners there really don't want a frontage road
either. The indications from them at the Council hearing were that they
could not afford an assessment district to put in a frontage road. He got
the impression that if a parkway is to go in, the homeowners would want it
to run along the Arroyo. Since then, the Council has revised it to not
allow one side of the road to be improved at City expense
B. Commissioner Jamieson suggested that a letter be directed to Kaiser Sand
and Gravel to thank them for their prompt action in following up on the
Commission's suggestion that trees be planted along Stanley Boulevard to
screen their facility as much as possible.
C. Commissioner Jamieson then offered a motion instructing the Engineering
Department to come up with two alternate design proposals for the Sunol
Boulevard/First Street merging point.
Roll Call Vote
Motion: Jamieson
Seconded: Butler
Ayes: Doherty, Jamieson,
Noes: None
Absent: None
Abstain: None
Shepherd, Wood, Chairman Butler
D. Commissioner Wood instructed staff to direct a letter to the Division
of Highways Landscape Maintenance Section to point out to them that steps
should be taken by them to improve maintenance of freeway rights-of-way, such
as at Hopyard and #580 and at Santa Rita Road/#580.
E. Commissioner Wood then talked about the role of the Planning Commissioner,
the necessary dedication and caliber of person who would undertake such an
assignment. He expressed the feeling that such a person would need to have
a certain "feel" for the town and its people. He commended the two Commiss-
ioners coming up for re-appointment (Butler and Doherty), and their dedi-
cation. This feeling was seconded by Commissioners Jamieson and Shepherd.
Chairman Butler expressed thanks for the comments.
Commissioner Wood also said he felt that the Council members could probably
benefit from reading "The Job of the Planning Commissioner" and said he would
like to see each member receive a copy.
F. Commissioner Shepherd asked about the ongoing construction work at the
Presbyterian Church. Councilmember Brandes stated that the church is doing
some reroofing and that they intend to rectify the situation before long.
-8-
