THE CITY OF <br />,.~,~.~w,o,.. , <br />j~L~ ~S~NT~N~ <br />Proclaims <br />May 12 - 20, 2007 <br />National Tourism Week <br />WHEREAS, tourism and travel generate millions of jobs and billions in taxes, and is a vital <br />resource in improving America's image around the world; and <br />WHEREAS, in Pleasanton, the travel industry contributes substantially to the community's cultural <br />and social well being; and <br />WHEREAS, every citizen benefits from travel and tourism as the travel industry substantially <br />enhances our personal growth and education, while promoting intercultural understanding and <br />appreciation of Pleasanton's history, geography, and culture; and <br />WHEREAS, travel is one of America's largest service exports providing a travel trade surplus in <br />excess of $7 billion, and is one of the nation's largest employers, accounting for more than 7.5 <br />million direct travel-generated jobs; and <br />WHEREAS, last year, spending by domestic and international visitors in the U.S. generated $703 <br />billion in direct expenditures nationwide and direct spending travel in California was $93.8 billion; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, regionally, through the efforts of the Tri-Valley Convention & Visitors Bureau, <br />$4,248,068 in economic impact has been generated in this fiscal year-to-date, with an expectation to <br />surpass a goal of $5,000,000 by fiscal year-end. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council hereby proclaims May 12-20, <br />2007 as National Tourism Week and recognizes the value that travel and tourism brings to the <br />community. <br />Jennifer Hosterman, Mayor <br />Cindy McGovern, Vice Mayor <br />Matt Sullivan, Councilmember <br />Cheryl Cook-Kallio, Councilmember <br />Jerry Thorne, Councilmember <br />10 <br />
