To derive more
accurate projections of future travel behavior, the model stratifies trip ends by six
trip purposes:

. Home-Work (trips between residences and places of employment)

. Home-Shop (trips between residences and places of retail employment or
personal errands)

. Home-SociallRec (trips between residences and social visits or recreational
attractions)

. Home-Local School (trips between residences and local public elementary,
middle and high schools)

. Home-Regional School (trips between residences and regional schools and
local private schools)

. Non-Horne-Based (linked trips between uses)

Splitting the trips into purposes allows for a better understanding of the
relationship between jobs and housing, by separating commute trips. It also
provides more control over the trip distribution, since different types of trips involve
different trip lengths. For a peak period model, it is important to identifY the
differences in travel characteristics over the day.

City of Pleasanton
Tra[Jel Dem.and Forecasting and Micro-Sinwlation Models

Page 7
January 23, 2007
