Tree Report, Trinity Lutheran Church HortScience, Inc.
WMB Architects, June 2006 Page 8
Appraisal of Value
The City of Pleasanton requires that The value of all trees be established for bonding and
replacement calculation purposes. To accomplish this, I used the standard methods found in
Guide for Plant Appraisal, 9th edition (published in 2000 by the International Society of
Arboriculture, Champaign IL). In addition, 1 referred to Species Classification and Group
Assignment (2004), a publication of the Western Chapter of the International Society of
Arboriculture. These two documents outline the methods employed in tree appraisal.
The value of landscape trees is based upon four factors: size, species, condition and location
Size is measured as trunk diameter, normally 54" above grade. The species factor considers
the adaptability and appropriateness of the plant in the East Bay area. The Species
Class cation and Group Assignment lists recommended species ratings and evaluations.
Condition reflects the health and structural integrity of the individual, as noted in the Tree
Survey Form. Location considers the site, placement and contribution of the tree in its
surrounding landscape.
The appraised value of the 33 surveyed trees is $58, 950
The appraised value of the 11 trees recommended for preservation is $27,800 (Table 4).
This includes the values of the two (2) street trees (#428 and 440), and the two (2) off-site
trees (#457 and 458).
The appraised value of the 22 trees recommended for removal is $31,150 (Table 5, following
page).
Table 4: Appraised value of trees recommended for preservation
Tree # Species Trunk Appraised Value
Diameter (US Dollars)
(in.)

259 Deodarcedar 19,18 6,400
428 London plane 18 3,750
429 Ca. sycamore 7 700
430 Ca. sycamore 7 700
440 Sweet gum 11 1,200
441 English walnut 6,5,5,4 400
442 Hollywood juniper 13 2,100
443 Privet 7,7,6,3 250
448 London plane 22 4,000
457 Chinese elm 14,14,12 7,100
458 Raywood ash 11 1,200
Total $27,800
