Tree Report, Peet's Coffee HortScience, Inc.
Peter G. Shutts Page 7
Tree Preservation Guidelines
The goal of tree preservation is not merely tree survival during development but
maintenance of tree health and beauty for many years. Trees retained on sites that are
subject to extensive injury during construction and are not adequately maintained become
a liability rather than an asset. However, the response of individual trees will depend on
the amount of excavation, the care with which demolition is carried out and the degree of
compaction needed to install new paving. These impacts can be minimized by
coordinating construction activity in the TREE PROTECTION ZONE. The following
recommendations will help maintain and improve the health and vitality of the trees.
Design recommendations
1. Any plan affecting trees should be reviewed by the Consulting Arborist with
regard to tree impacts. These include, but are not limited to, improvement plans,
utility and drainage plans, grading plans, landscape and irrigation plans and
demolition plans.
2. The Consulting Arborist will identify a TREE PROTECTION ZONE for trees to be
preserved in which no soil disturbance is permitted. Trees to be preserved will be
impacted on one side only. The TREE PROTECTION ZONE shall be defined as the
existing curb for all trees.
3. No underground services including utilities, sub - drains, water or sewer shall be
placed In the TREE PROTECTION ZONE.
4. Any herbicides placed under paving materials must be safe for use around trees
and labeled for that use.
5. Any irrigation systems must be designed so that no trenching will occur within the
Tree Protection Zone.
Pre - construction treatments and recommendations
1. Prior to the start of site demolition, the Consulting Arborist will meet with the
demolition, grading and other relevant contractors to review limits of construction
activity, identify areas requiring fencing, identify trees to be removed and review
work procedures.
2. Trees to be retained shall have hay bales placed around the trunk to a height of
6'. Hay bales will serve as the TREE PROTECTION ZONE and shall remain in place
until all grading and construction is completed.
3. Prior to the start of grading, trees will require pruning to clean the crown and /or
provide clearance. All pruning shall be completed by a Certified Arborist or Tree
Worker and adhere to the Tree Pruning Guidelines of the International Society of
Arboriculture.
Recommendations for tree protection during construction
1. Any grading, construction, demolition or other work within the TREE PROTECTION
ZONE should be monitored by the Consulting Arborist.
2. Any root pruning required for construction purposes shall receive the prior
approval of, and be supervised by, the Consulting Arborist.
