ATTACHMENT 4
THE CITY OF Item 6C
pL£ASANTONo
MEMORANDUM
Date: December 8, 2005
To: Trails Ad Hoc Committee
From: Fan Ventura, Management Analyst
Subject: Continued Discussion of Possible Improvements for Iron Horse Trail Segment
(Santa Rita Road to Dublin- Pleasanton BART Station)
At the October 24, 2005 meeting, Committee Member Jones (representing the Iron Horse Trail -North
Subcommittee) presented a proposal to change part of the future trail alignment. Attachment 1 is a
description of the current and proposed alignments.
Engineering Division staff and I toured the proposed alignment. The following items were noted:
• The lack of a designated bicycle lane along the south side of Owens Drive;
• The assumption that bicycles would have to use sidewalks for travel (sidewalks were widened
for bicycle use);
• Zone 7 access gates from Owens Drive to the path along Tassajara Creek already exists;
• The possibility that road bicycles would not be able to navigate the path along Tassajara Creek
with the current gravel base;
• Access from Tassajara Creek Leads only onto the north side of Stoneridge Drive;
• Potential bicycle travel along the north side of Stoneridge Drive would be going against traffic;
• The lack of an existing access from the north side of Stoneridge Drive to the Arroyo Mocho
Trail going east;
• Ownership of property adjacent to the Arroyo Mocho Trail, between Stoneridge Drive and Santa
Rita Road;
• Access to the Arroyo Mocho might have to sloped very gradually to comply with ADA
requirements;
• Trees (possibly covered by the City's tree protection ordinance) would likely have to be
removed for a new access ramp;
• The presence of a Kinder- Morgan petroleum line and recycled water line in the arca of a
potential new access point.
Engineering staff will take these items into consideration when preparing their preliminary cost estimate.
The estimate is still in progress, but could be ready for distribution at the meeting.
We are also working with the Traffic Engineering Division to determine if the proposed alignment is
feasible, and if there are any potential costs from a traffic standpoint. We will update the Committee at
the January 23 meeting with further information.
