THE CITY OF
pLEASANTON.
CITY COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT
17
March 6, 2007
Parks and Community Services
TITLE: DISCUSSION OF RECOMMENDED ALIGNMENT FOR IRON HORSE
TRAIL (DUBLIN - PLEASANTON BART STATION TO SANTA RITA
ROAD)
SUMMARY
The Iron Horse Trail segment between Santa Rita Road and Mohr Avenue was
accepted by the City Council on December 19, 2006. The Mohr Avenue to Busch Road
segment is expected to be completed in early 2007. In anticipation of completing this
work, the Council requested that a proposed route for the Iron Horse Trail from the
BART Station to Santa Rita Road, including appropriate signage, be developed for its
consideration. Following East Bay Regional Park District's originally intended alignment
along the railway corridor poses a number of physical and financial challenges. The
Trails Ad Hoc Committee and the Parks and Recreation Commission have reviewed
these issues, and offered recommendations for a temporary connector until a
permanent solution can be implemented.
PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION RECOMMENDATION
That the City Council: 1) Adopt Option 2A as the recommended temporary connector
from the BART station to the Iron Horse Trail segment at Santa Rita Road, with all
necessary signage; and 2) Direct staff to work with East Bay Regional Park District to
explore the feasibility of Option 3 as the permanent Iron Horse Trail segment through
Pleasanton.
It should also be noted that staff supports Option 1 as the recommended temporary
connector from the BART station to the Iron Horse Trail segment at Santa Rita Road.
FINANCIAL STATEMENT
Staff estimates costs for Option 1 at approximately $1,500 for one -time signage. There
is sufficient available budget in the General Trail Improvements and Development
project, CIP 017037 for this option.
Option 2A is estimated at $7,500 for one -time signage and trail gate modifications, plus
$2,600 for annual maintenance costs. There is sufficient available budget in CIP
017037 for the signage and trail gate modifications; however, funds for annual
maintenance would have to be added to the Operating Budget.
