Councilmember Sullivan referenced Fred Norman's ongoing request to see if there is
any interest on the Council to hold aCouncil-sponsored community meeting where the
public can talk about the Iraq war. Another idea would be to have a panel discussion.
He questioned if there was an interest on behalf of the Council.
Councilmember Cook-Kallio indicated that she would support a discussion in a venue
other than a City Council Meeting.
Mayor Hosterman indicated her support and said she believes in government and being
able to send direction to elected officials begins at a local level.
Discussion ensued whether this forum should be at a Council Meeting or just a forum
for the people of Pleasanton to be heard.
Councilmember McGovern stated when she was elected to office; it was in a non-
partisan position. She stated she represents the citizens of Pleasanton. She does not
believe that you can have a public meeting or a City Council Meeting and come out with
a direction from the public. In order to get a true sense of the community she suggested
a vote of the people. For the Council to think that they could have this type of forum
and get direction from the citizens without all citizens being present is wrong. She
recognizes that Mr. Norman has a strong and true compassion for this issue, but there
are military personnel all over this country, not just in Iraq. If there is to be a moment of
silence, it should be for all.
Councilmember Sullivan asked that the forum be televised, which would mean it should
be held at City Hall.
Mayor Hosterman referenced a previous instance and suggested having a panel of
experts.
Councilmember Cook-Kallio indicated she does not feel this is a partisan issue.
Councilmember Cook-Kallio suggested inviting students from Foothill and Amador High
Schools to discuss this issue and hold a forum.
Council concurred placing this matter on a future agenda to discuss options on how this
type of forum might take place.
COUNCIL REPORTS
27.
