Steve Otto

From: Frank Spindler [ 1 'J
Sent: Tuesday, November 28, 2006 12:07 PM
To: Steve Otto
Cc: Jerry Iserson; Maria Hoey; Mayor and City Council
Subject: My strong support for the John Paul II Activity Center

Dear Steve,

I'd like to express my strong support for the Catholic Community of Pleasanton's new John Paul II Activities Center.

My family has lived in Pleasanton for 13 years, and we reside at 1338 Benedict Ct.

I believe this new center will provide strong benefits across the community. As a resident, I feel Pleasanton can take pride in
many things, among them the availability of modern, first class facilities that enhance the quality of life of our city's residents. The
new Activities Center will provide this benefit. The Catholic Community of Pleasanton is a thriving community, with roughly 5000
Pleasanton families and 15000 residents as members. The facility will serve these residents and others with programs to
enhance the physical, educational, and spiritual grow1h of both youth and adults. The facility will support many beyond the actual
parish members, as the CYO basketball program which the Center will serve is used broadly by many young people in the city,
many of which are not church members. In an age of growing fitness problems of our youth, programs like CYO athletics provide
a major benefit to the community. The facility will provide space for many other youth activities, such as youth group meetings,
retreats, etc. It can only be a positive to the city and all residents when programs such as these are offered, presenting an
alternative to less desirable activities many young people are susceptible to. Additionally, with healthy amounts of space and the
presence of both kitchen and shower facilities, the Center could serve the city in emergency situations surrounding earthquakes or
other disasters.

I see no negative components to this facility. Large events at the Center will not overlap with Mass services, so will present no
problems with additional traffic load or parking. In fact, in that programs held at the new center will handle many current activities
held at the St. Augustine's church site on Bernal, the net traffic effect will be to draw traffic away from the largely residential
neighborhoods of St. Augustines to the more commercial areas where the new center is located.

Thank you for considering my inputs in this process, and I hope that the facility will receive prompt approval from the Planning
Commission.

Sincerely,
Frank Spindler

11/29/2006
