. Horticultural Consultants

hr~D
HORT~~~,"c
/~~,
.t

October 3, 2006

.

Stephanie Allen
John Miller Architects
100 View St, Suite 203
Mountain View, CA 94041

Subject: Tree Appraisal for Saint Elizabeth Seton Church

Stephanie,

As part of the development application process, the City of Pleasanton requested the
appraised value of all the trees surveyed at Saint Elizabeth Seton Church site. This letter
responds to that request

HortScience, Inc. prepared a Tree Report for the site dated June 28, 2006. Included in
the Tree Report were the appraised values of tree #181 (the only 'Heritage' tree
recommended for removal) and tree #182 (the only surveyed tree recommended for
preservation),

In appraising the value of the plants in this area, I employed the standard methods found
in Guide for Plant Appmlsa/, 9th edition (International Society of Arboriculture, Savoy
IL, 2000), In addition, I referred to Species Classification and Group Assignment
(2004), a publication of the Western Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture.
These two documents outline the methods employed in tree appraisal.

The value of landscape trees is based upon four factors: size, species, condition and
location. Size is measured as trunk diameter, normally 54" above grade, The species
factor considers the adaptability and appropriateness of the plant in the inland valleys of
the East Bay area, The Species Classification and Group Assignment lists
recommended species ratings. Condition reflects the health and structural integrity of the
individual. I used our 2004 Tree Survey as the basis for assessing existing condition,
The location factor considers the site, placement and contribution of the tree in its
surrounding landscape.

The appraised value of the 10 trees not included in the June 2006 Tree Report is $7,400
(Table.t, following page), These are non-heritage trees recommended for removal,

.
