toward reducing the potential for human injury and loss of life, and to minimize property datnagc and
cconomic and social disruption duc to natural and human-madc hazards.

RISKS OF HAZARDS!

All urban ateas in California arc subjcct to a varicty of naturally-occurring hazards as wcll as hazards
causcd by human activitics. Risks to lifc and propetty within thc I'lanning Arca arc most commonly
Posed by geology (carthquakcs'- landslidcs'- ....n-:+-firp. flood. ~n!iM1nn tr~in ~nd ~lIt() ~rr;{l('nt". and the
mitigatcd coml'lctely. Howcvcr, potcntially dcvastating impacts I'rcscntcd by such hazards can bc

TI,C I'ublic Safcty Elcmcnt contains policics and programs which cstablish "safcty" criteria for
evaluating ncw dcvelol'mcnts and which establish standards for thc City's emergcncy responsc scrviccs
and ptograms to ptotect lifc and propcrty.
Geologic Setting

'111C Plcasanton Planning Arca is locatcd within thc Amador Vallcy, which is part of thc Coast Rangc
geologic province of California. --nlC Coast Range province is a large area of folded and faulted rocks
situatcd along thc western cdgc of thc North Amcrican continent. Thc Amador Vallcy is a deprcssion
in this tock formation which joins thc San Ramon Vallcy to thc north with thc Livcrmorc Vallcy to thc
cast. 'Il,C geologic conditions which havc formcd the topogral'hy surrounding Plcasanton arc the rcsult
of a global I'attern of moving contincntal I'latcs which havc shapcd thc carth's outcr surfacc ovcr
'l1,c undcrlying gcology of scdimcntary rock in thc Pleasanton Ridgc and thc Southcast Hills, the thick
dCl'osits of unconsolidated scdimcnt on thc Valley floor, and arcas of oldcr landslidc dcposits are
factors, which; along with thc ptoximity of scvcral carthquake faults, crcatc a geologic sctting
