<br />The A/qlliJt-Pli% lIaifllYIJ Ad passed by the State legislaturc in 1972 (rcnamcd the A/qlliJt-Pli%
<br />Earthqllake Fall/t /.ollillg Ad in 1993) cstablished carthquake fault zoncs along faults considered by the
<br />State Division of Mincs and Gcology to bc active or I'otentially activc. An activc fault is considercd
<br />onc which has expcricnccd surfacc displacemcnt within the last 11,000 years, while a I'otentially active
<br />fault is a fault which has movcd during thc I'ast two to thrcc million ycars but not provcn to havc
<br />movcd within thc past 11,000 ycars.

<br />to assist cities and counties in avoiding the hazard of surface fault rul'ture. The earth(luake fault zonc
<br />cxtcnds for 500 fect in width on cithcr sidc of an idcntificd fault tracc of major active faults and about
<br />200 to 300 feet in width on either side of a minor active fault, as designated by the State. Dcvelopment
<br />of a building for human occupancy is generally rcstrictcd within 50 fcet of an identified fault. Thc
<br />Calaveras and Verona Faults arc thc only faults within thc Planning Arca rho' ,Iw S'o,p currcntly
