This report outlines the selection process for a
vendor and provides a policy for use of the network by the public.

Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Council:

BACKGROUND

The City Council's annual work plan includes the installation of a Wi-Fi network in the
Downtown area. Essentially, a wireless network creates a "hot zone" allowing computers,
including personal digital assistants such as palm pilots, to access printers, share files, servers,
and/or an Internet connection without any wires between them. Wireless networking hardware
uses radio frequencies to transmit information between the individual computers with each
computer requiring a wireless network adapter. A wireless network access point/router is used to
bridge or route the wireless network to traditional Ethernet or broadbrand home networks, or to
provide a shared Internet connection.

SR:06:171
Page 1
