4E

ii.

pLEASANTONo

City Council
Staff Report

June 20, 2006
Parks and Community Services Department
Finance Department

SUBJECT:

APPROVAL OF CONTRACT EXTENSION WITH WEST COAST
ARBORIST (WCA), TO EXPAND TREE PRUNING WORK
BEGINNING IN FY 2006/07

STAFF RECOMMENDATION:

That the City Council authorize the City Manager to execute the attached
Agreement, expanding the scope of services with West Coast Arborist, Inc.,
for tree trimming, removal, and inventory work for the not-to-exceed
amount of $425,000/year for FY 2006/07.

SUMMARY:

An inventory of all City maintained trees was conducted in 2003, which
determined the existence of over 14,500 street and 10,000 park and facility
trees. From inventory data regarding species and tree size, a management
plan was developed which suggests a three (3) year pruning schedule to
address the City's expanding urban forest. Since many City street trees have
never been professionally pruned, staff supports this accelerated pruning
schedule. After the initial cycle is completed, future pruning will be
adjusted based on tree species and site conditions.

In June 2005, the Council approved a one (I) year tree trimming contract
with West Coast Arborists (WCA) for $250,000. Anticipating that
expanded tree work would likely be required in the future, the Council
authorized up to four (4) additional years with WCA, at a Not-to-Exceed
limit of $600,000. This first extension is for one (I) year, at a maximum of
$425,000.

SR 06:139
Page I
