<br />~ <br /> <br />Since the Memorial Gardens' inception, many of Pleasanton's founding families and historic figures <br />have been buried there, including fonner Judge Gayle and Joshua Neal. War veterans lIDd thl:ir family <br />members have also been buried there. <br /> <br />W. SITE DESCRIPTION <br /> <br />. .... .- ',. .. - ..:- <br />: _:' <br />: ...".- ,. <br /> <br />The Memorial Gardens is located next to St. Augustine's Catholic Cemetery on a 5-acrc site on the east <br />side of Sunol Boulevard, boetween Sonoma Drive and Sycamore Road. It is currently z.ooed Agriculture <br />(A) District, which conditionally allo\\'S cemeteries. There is no conditional use pcnnit for this cemetery <br />as it pn:dates the City's zoning. As such, it is a legal, non-conforming use. <br /> <br />1. Physical Characteristics <br /> <br />The Memorial Gardens is located on a moderatel y sloping bill and has at\I1lC:tive vistas of surrounding <br />hills. The site bas a gradual slope in the northern half of the cemetery and moderate to steep slopes in the <br />southwest area of the site (20 to 36 percent slope). The site landscaping featUreS cxpaIISeS of grass lawn. <br />bushes, and scattered mature trees. There is a stand oflarge eucalyptus trees on the SOUlberly side <br />property line, an intermittent stream bed bordering the property at the south end. aad a line of cypress <br />treeS along the northerly side property line shared with St. Augustine's Cemetery. <br /> <br />~. <br />\ 2. Cemetery Layout <br /> <br />The Memorial Gardens is accessible by a narrow access road which loops arolDld the cemetery grounds. <br />Because: the Memorial Gardens has no designated parking for visitors. visitors gcncrally park along the <br />access road when tbey arc visiting gravesitcs or attending burial ceremonies.. Most of the developed <br />gravesites arc located in the northern half of the cemetery. -rm; Cl:lttetery management's parking and <br />temporary trailer offices/sheds are located in the southwest portion of property near the Cemetery's <br />enmmcCo <br /> <br />A majority of the Cemetery has been developed fOT gravesitcs (approximately t\vo-thirds of the site). <br />The developed graves include a combination of standard single burial graves, mausoleums, and a <br />smaller section devoted to compact cremation burials.
