<br />. add an approximately 20,263:1: square foot addition for theater, gallery display, classroom, <br />and support functions; and <br />· demolish approximately 7,863 square feet of the existing, non-historic portion of Fire <br />Station No.1. <br /> <br />The Firehouse Arts Center would provide the City with the following program elements: <br /> <br />. 240-seat theater with flexible seating - to be used for youth theater productions, chamber <br />music, small dramatic productions, small musical concerts, lectures, literary events, <br />film/video presentations, meetings, etc. <br />· Art Gallery - designed to display all forms of fine art, including installations and video <br />art. The gallery would be operated to support local arts organizations and its members <br />and would also display regional, state, and national artists where appropriate. The gallery <br />would be designed to achieve a reasonable level of museum/gallery accreditation, <br />allowing the display of artwork with significant import and value. <br />. Classrooms - for multiple applications, including dedicated week-long (or longer) arts <br />workshops, fine arts and crafts classes, rehearsals, meetings, lectures, etc. <br />. Office space - to support facility staff. <br />· Lobby space - to support both the theater and gallery. <br />. Support facility for the theater - includes dressing rooms and green room. <br />. Box Office - to support events at the Center and possibly serve as a central Box Office <br />for community organizations and events. <br />. Restroom facilities - to support activities at the center and potentially the Downtown <br />area during regular operating hours of the facility. <br /> <br />DISCUSSION <br /> <br />Please refer to the Planning Commission staff report for additional discussion of the overall <br />process consisting of the development of the design program, architectural concepts, <br />community outreach, and workshops that were held. These, along with comments provided by <br />the Planning Commission and subsequent meeting with Pleasanton Downtown Association <br />(PDA) members, reflect the refinement of the design, configuration, and material choices. <br /> <br />Design Philosophy <br /> <br />In considering a basic approach or philosophical foundation for the design of the new addition to <br />the historic Fire Station No.1, ELS reviewed the Downtown Specific Plan architectural <br />guidelines. In addition, ELS consulted the historic preservation guidelines developed by the <br />National Parks Service, U.S Department of the Interior, which encourages a visual delineation <br />between the building which is to be preserved and any new additions. New exterior additions <br />should be differentiated so that the new work is not confused with what is genuinely part of the <br />past. <br /> <br />SR 06:079 <br />Page 4 of 17 <br />
