FISCAL IMPACT:
Through this program the State provides additional funding of $137,539 to Front Line Law
Enforcement for fiscal yeaz 1997/98, with anticipation that the program may be funded in each
succeeding yeaz. There aze no additional costs, and unlike some Federally funded programs, we
do not provide matching funds and do not have to absorb the cost in the event of the absence or
limitation of State funding. Decisions regarding funding of projects aze made based on need
weighed against available resources. In the probable event that Mobile Data Computers are found
to make an appreciable increase in the availability of officers, the council may be approached to
fund the existing unfunded C.I.P. (approximately $200,000, originally $350,000) to complete the
equipping of the remaining patrol fleet with computers.
We recommend that the Council adopt a resolution authorizing the City Manager to fund this
program for 1997/98 through the use of the COPS appropriation.
Respectfully submitted,
W.
