__ "revitalization," she believed that "redevelopment" was the commonly used word- She was
generally very pleased with the Vision Statement.
Vanessa Kawaihu, 871 Sycamore Road, agreed with Commissioner Blank's comments regarding
changing the City's motto to "Pleasanton: A Great Place to Live, Work and Play," which she
believed was more friendly. She did not believe it was specific enough to be a Vision Statement.
She noted that James Paxson would be meeting with the ud hoc committee to bring forward the
Specific Plan.
THE PUBLIC HEARING WAS CLOSED~
Commissioner Roberts noted that she had written down all the goals from the 1996 General Plan.
She believed the Vision Statement would come from the discussions of the various elements,
including the public hearings- She felt like they were starting all over again aRer finding out
what the people wanted. She believed the "progress" statement came out of the 19f30s, and
raised people's hackles at this time. She proposed the Vision Statement read:
"Pleasanton is awell-planned, well-rounded community of desirable
neighborhoods and awarding downtown of varied economic base, and a
variety of community facilities. As we approach buildout in the next few
years, we hope to maintain these desirable qualities by developing a safe,
convenient and uncongested circulation system by providing more
recreational and cultural facilities and opportunities to participate for our
residents, by preserving our natural resources as well as our scenic resources.
_- We want to maintain and improve our water quality, our energy resources, our
air quality, our environmental sensitivity. We want to continue to minimize
any health and safety hazards, acknowledging our relationship to the region;
we seek to work with their governments to solve common problems- The
City's future, this vision, will depend upon maintaining our balanced budget,
and using our financial resources wisely. Finally, we want to continue to
promote civic participation, emphasizing the Community Character principles
of respect, responsibility, compassion, self=discipline, honesty and integrity"
She believed bullet points could be placed under there, but that they were also goals that would
be discussed under each element of the Specit3c Place that would be discussed further~
Commissioner Blank noted that he did not intend for the "Live, Work, and Play" crcotto to be the
entire Vision Statement. He expressed concern about the use of the word "redevelopment,"
which brought visions of eminent domain to the residents; revitalization is a broader term with
more options-
Commissioner Fox believed the bullets should be blended with Commissioner Roberts's
narrative- She believed the "families and visitors" bullet point should be included with
maintaining the Historic Downtown- She would like some mention of "small-town character."
Commissioner Roberts noted that the Housing Element contained 1 S goals that dovetailed with
_. Commissioner Fox's suggestions_
PLANNING COMMISSION MINUTES April 27, 2005 Page 4 of 13
