November 21, 2006 and January 2, 2007 City <br />Council meetings. <br /> <br />Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Council: <br /> <br />BACKGROUND <br /> <br />In recent years, the City Council has adopted the practice of cancelling Council meetings that <br />occur near holidays. Setting the schedule for the remainder of 2006 vvill greatly assist in <br />managing the agendas for the remainder of the year. <br /> <br />DISCUSSION <br /> <br />The first holiday that often conflicts vvith Council meetings is the July 4th holiday_ <br />years, if the Council meeting fell too close to this holiday, the meeting vvas cancelledo <br />the first July Council meeting actually falls on July 4th. <br /> <br />In recent <br />This year, <br /> <br />In the past. the Council has discussed ~hether to cancel a meeting in August to allovv for final <br />family vacations prior to the start of the school year. The 2006-2007 school year begins on <br />Tuesday, August 29th. The first and second meetings in August fall on August 1st and 15th, <br />respectivelyo Given the family orientation of our community, staff suggests that the August 1st <br />meeting be cancelled. <br /> <br />This year, the second November meeting falls on November 21 s" tvvo days before Thanksgiving~ <br />the corresponding school break period is November 20-240 As a result, it vvould appear that <br />cancellation of the November 21 st meeting is necessaryo The first meeting in January 2007 falls <br />on January 2nd~ the corresponding school break period is December 25 - January 5. Past <br />experience has been that. due to increased holiday festivities, the community loses interest in <br />vvhat is occurring on the Council agenda as vve approach the ~inter holiday season.
