The PDA is proposing the sign project be installed in multiple phases. The first phase would
install a sign at four locations deemed advantageous by the RSSSC:
o Main StreetlRay Street!St. John Street intersection
o Main Street/Spring Street/St. Mary Street intersection
o Main StreetIRose Avenue/Neal Street intersection
o Main Street/ Angela Street intersection
Additional sign locations would be phased in based on an increase in retail tenants with the
following criteria:
o a minimum of 3 retail businesses on the side street would be required to constitute
an additional sign,
o businesses must be within the Downtown commercial district,
o businesses must be open on weekends, and
o businesses must meet the needs of the visitors to Pleasanton.
At each of the four locations, the Committee identified existing poles to which the signs could be
attached. The RSSSC and City staff have visited each location to ensure that the placement of the
signs does not interfere with traffic visibility or present an impediment in the public right-of-way.
Staff supports the PDA's goal of developing a sign program that identifies side street businesses
within the Downtown commercial district. Many other cities have signs that aid pedestrian traffic
in locating additional shopping venues; this is especially important in an area like Downtown that
welcomes tourism. As well, there are other signs affixed to poles in the Downtown (Wine Trail,
Mitchell Katz Winery, etc.) that establish a precedent for directional signs in the commercial
area. Moreover, these signs will help to increase the vitality of businesses on the side streets
thereby encouraging the continued development of Downtown from Main Street out toward First
Street and Peters Avenue, consistent with the City's and the PDA's goals. As well, the attractive
appearance of the signs and accompanying scrolled bracket will add an artistic element to the
Downtown district.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff agrees with the RSSSC and recommends the selection of Option 1 as the preferred sign
design, as the colors of this sign evoke the classic colors and elements of Downtown Pleasanton.
Additionally, the medium green and gold colors are those used by the City of Pleasanton. Staff
also concurs with the PDA's suggested locations.
Based on Council's support for creating an off-site signage program within the Downtown
district and of the proposed design elements of the signs, staff will coordinate and approve the
signs as authorized by the City's municipal code.
SR:05:286
Page 3
