. - -
.' " I
I
Staff conducted a field review of Vineyard A venue between Bernal A venue and Montevino I
Drive in an attempt to create a traffic calming plan for Vineyard Avenue that addressed all of
these traffic issues. Staff determined that roundabouts like those constructed along Valley I
I
Avenue south of Bernal Avenue, and as planned along Vineyard Avenue adjacent to the Neal
School site could be constructed within the existing paved area at the intersections of Vineyard
Avenue at Touriga Drive and at Sauterne Way. I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
Rough sketch of Vineyard Avenue at Touriga Drive showing the amount of pavement that could I
be replaced by landscaping and the reduction of the 84 foot long crosswalks to two 20 foot
long croswalks with a center refuge area if a roundabout were constructed.
Initial traffic simulations of these roundabouts indicate that they would margianally manage I
I
evening traffic through Existing plus Approved development traffic projections. Morning
commute volumes worked well through Buildout development traffic projections. Buildout
evening projections are actually lower than Existing plus Approved volumes due the
assumption that Stoneridge Drive is extended and the Route 84 Expressway is completed as
part of the Buildout roadway network.
I
The residents expressed a preference for a calming plan that might also reduce traffic volume I
growth along Vineyard Avenue and this alternative would most likely facilitate that objective.
The traffic volumes use in this analysis did not reflect Sunol Boulevard traffic metering or
other measures that may be available to reduce traffic along this roadway and further improve I
the operation of the roundabounts at these two intersections.
X:\ADMIN\PGGS\Council2005\MEETINGlOO405\SR 05276 Attachmentl.doc
Page 5 I
