If Stoneridge Drive is extended to the east and Jack London Boulevard is extended by
Livermore, Vineyard A venue would be one of three parallel east/west surface streets, I
I
I
Vineyard Avenue Traffic Volume History I
16,000
CD 14,000 I
E
"
'0 12,000
>
u
IE
III 10,000
~
I-
~
" 8,000
0
J:
,
'Ol' 6,000
N
CD
Cl
III
~ 4,000
CD
>
<I:
2,000
0
1988 1990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002
Year
Traffic volumes along Vineyard A venue east of Bernal A venue have doubled in the last seven
years, and have more than quadupled east of Montevino Drive. As traffic congestion
increases along 1-580, regional cut-through traffic diverts to these parallel surface streets.
Modifmg roadway and intersection capacity to meet this changing traffic demand is required I
to maintain LOS D or better conditions, Increasing capacity along Vineyard Avenue could I
help to reduce congestion along First Street, Stanley Boulevard and Bernal A venue by
reducing delays along Vineyard Avenue and attracting more traffic to this corridor. I
However, the increasing traffic volumes along Vineyard Avenue have significantly reduced I
I
the number of gaps in traffic necessary to allow pedestrians to cross the roadway and motorists I
to access Vineyard Avenue from several existing side streets and driveways. The new I
realignment of Vineyard A venue and the Specific Plan for the corridor will add even more I
public and private access points to new developent with similar problems relating to access, I
egress, pedestrian, school area, speed, and other safety issues. With the realignment of .
Vineyard A venue, staff has attempted to solve potential traffic problems by designing traffic
calming roundabouts adjacent to Neal School and a traffic signal at the multi-use trail crossing I
X:\ADMIN\PGGS\Council2005\MEETINGl00405\SR 05276 Attachmentl.doc I
Page 7
