B( )
pLEASANTONc City Council
Staff Report
October 18, 2005
Public Works Department
SUBJECT: REVIEW OF THE ROADWAY WIDTH ON VINEYARD AVENUE
BETWEEN MONTEVINO DRIVE AND BERNAL AVENUE
STAFF RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends that the City Council take the following action at the
meeting of October 18, 2005:
1. Direct staff to proceed with obtaining a consultant to design Vineyard
Avenue between Montevino Drive and Bernal Avenue as a two-lane
street with medians.
SUMMARY: In the fall of 1998, staff received numerous complaints of increased traffic
volume, speed and noise on Vineyard Avenue between Bernal Avenue and
Montevino Drive. These complaints were driven by a combination of the
traffic diversion from Stanley Boulevard due to lane closures and concerns
about additional traffic impacts from the Vineyard Corridor Specific Plan.
In June of 1999, City Council directed staff to implement the
Neighborhood Traffic Calming Program to address these neighborhood
concerns. From the Traffic Calming Program, eleven recommendations
were developed, and approved by City Council in July of 2000.
In February of 2003, City Council approved the metering of traffic on
Vineyard Avenue using the traffic signal at Ruby Hill Boulevard. City
Council also approved the construction of a speed sensitive traffic signal
at Montevino Drive to replace the 4-way stop and reduce traffic
congestion. City Council directed staff to resurface Vineyard Avenue
with rubberized asphalt as soon as possible, and reduce the number of
lanes on Vineyard A venue east of Bernal A venue as a test of the effects of
narrowing the roadway.
SR:05:294
