Program Confirmation The Task Force revisited and refined the anticipated programming for the Firehouse Arts Center, previously identified during the development of the Do~vntown Parks and Trails Master Plan and confirmed by the Downtown Specific Plan. The Task Force confirmed the following program uses for the Center: · 250 seat theater with flexible seating - to be used for youth theater productions, chamber music, small dramatic productions, small musical concerts, lectures, literary events, film/video presentations, meetings, etc. · Art Gallery - designed to display all forms of fine art, including installations and video art. The gallery would be operated to support local arts organizations, its members, and would also display regional, state and national artists where appropriate. The gallery would be designed to achieve a reasonable level of museum/gallery accreditation, allowing the display of artwork with significant import and value. · Classrooms - to be used for multiple applications, including dedicated week-long (or longer) arts workshops, fine arts and crafts classes, rehearsals, meetings, lectures, etc. · Office space - to support facility staff. · Lobby space - to support both the theater and gallery. · Support facility for the theater - including dressing rooms and green room. · Restroom facilities - to support activities at the Center and potentially the Downtown area during regular operating hours of the facility. · Box Office - to support events at the Center and possibly serve as a central Box Office for community organizations and events. During the course of discussions with the consultants, the Task Force also identified several additional program elements: · Set support and preparation facilities for the theater. · Preparation and storage facilities for the Art Gallery. Downstairs office to acc~ommodate facility staff and Box Office operations. · Refreshment counter and facilities in the Lobby. · Enhanced size and utility of the Art Gallery. Concept and Schematic Design The Task Force, staff and project consultants reviewed a number of initial design approaches which would adequately accommodate the identified program elements. The Task Force settled quickly on a two-story approach, which would result in a facility offering approximately 18,000 square feet of programming space. In the course of its various planning meetings, the Task Force further refined the concept and schematic design, which is being presented for review this evening.
