THE CITY OF

pL£ AS&NTON, CityCouncil
Staff Report

September 6, 2005
Parks and Community Services

SUBJECT: CONCEPTUAL DISCUSSION OF FIREWORKS FOR JULY 4TH

PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION RECOMMENDATION:

That the City Council pursue with the Alameda County Fair Board the
possibility of a jointly-sponsored July 4th fireworks event in the City of
Pleasanton.

STAFF RECOMMENDATION:

That the City Council continue to support the Fair Board Association's
efforts to promote a positive family atmosphere at the Fair, particularly on
July 4th, and consider sending a letter encouraging the Association to
resume the fireworks show in 2006.

SUMMARY: Prior to 1999, the Alameda County Fair Board held a July 4th fireworks
show in conjunction ~vith its annual fair. In 1999, the show was
discontinued due to a shooting incident that occurred the previous year. The
Parks and Recreation Commission inquired about the possibility of resuming
the fireworks show, with the City possibly providing financial support for
the event. After reviewing issues related to this topic, the Commission
recommended that the City Council pursue that concept with the Fair Board.
This report also includes staff's review of proposed options and logistics
associated with a separate City-sponsored event.

Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Council:
BACKGROUND

SR 05:144
Page 1
