economically well off city with highly educated residents who expect a high quality of life and <br />excellent service from their local government. Finally, the traffic problems that plague many cities <br />in the Bay Area do not exist in Pleasanton, and residents want to keep it that way. Therefore, <br />relatively small increases in traffic or speeding generate significant concern. <br />Generally speaking, Pleasanton has very few accidents in its residential areas. While the City itself <br />is relatively old, many residential neighborhoods have been developed in the last 10 years. The <br />roadway design in theses newer residential neighborhoods sometimes lend themselves to higher <br />than desired speeds. This, coupled with recent growth, has lead to an outpouring of residential <br />concern regarding increased speeds and traffic volumes. <br />In order to address the concerns of all of Pleasanton's neighborhoods, the City Council directed <br />staffto develop a citywide Neighborhood Traffic Calming Program. The overall goals of the <br />program are given below. The desire is to establish a program that treats all neighborhoods <br />equally, encourages Citizen involvement, addresses traffic problems and can be implemented <br />within existing staff and budget constraints. <br /> <br /> Goals <br /> <br /> The overall goals of the Neighborhood Traffic Calming Program are to: <br /> <br />o Improve local residents' sense of well being about their neighborhood streets and enhance <br /> traffic safety in residential areas. <br /> <br /> ° Evaluate all of Pleasanton's neighborhood traffic problems and produce adopted plans that are <br /> coordinated within and between neighborhoods. <br /> <br /> o Provide a Neighborhood Traffic Calming Program format that is responsive to all <br /> neighborhoods in the City of Pleasanton. <br /> <br /> o Develop and maintain a toolbox of approved devices to address neighborhood traffic problems. <br /> Provide a neighborhood forum for defining and understanding problems and solutions. <br /> <br /> Objectives <br /> <br /> ° The objectives of the program are to: <br /> <br /> o Encourage positive driver behavior in residential neighborhoods <br /> <br /> o Improve neighborhood livability by encouraging adherence to the speed limit. <br /> <br /> o Encourage citizen involvement through neighborhood workshops to determine acceptable <br /> calming devices for use in the neighborhood. <br /> <br /> <br />
