pL£AS, NTON Counei,
Staff Report
May 3, 2005
City Manager

SUBJECT: City Council Meeting Schedule

STAFF RECOMMENDATION: Cancel the July 5, August 2 and December 20, 2005
City Council meetings.

Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Council:

BACKGROUND

In recent years, the City Council has adopted the practice of cancelling Council meetings
that occur near holidays. Setting the schedule for the remainder of 2005 will greatly assist
in managing the agendas for the remainder of the year.

DISCUSSION

The first holiday that often conflicts with Council meetings is the July 4th holiday. In recent
years, if the Council meeting fell too close to this holiday, the meeting was cancelled.
This year, the first July Council meeting falls on July 5th.

In the past, the Council has discussed whether to cancel a meeting in August to allow for
final family vacations prior to the start of the school year. The 2005-2006 school year
begins on Monday, August 29th. The first and second meetings in August fall on August
2nd and 16th, respectively. Given the family orientation of our community, staff suggests
the August 2nd meeting be cancelled. (Last year, City Councils in nine of the other 13
cities in Alameda County cancelled one or more August meetings.)

This year, the second November meeting falls on November 15, nine days before
Thanksgiving; the corresponding school break period is November 21-25. As a result, it
appears that cancellation of the November 15th meeting is not necessary. The second

SR 05:116 1
