For those areas where water is either a landscape function or an ornamental landscape, such as ponds or
bird baths, there are commercial products available to prevent mosquito breeding. In addition, Alameda
County Mosquito Abatement will stock ponds with mosquito fish upon request.

In January of this year, the Pleasanton Police Department's Animal Control Division met with
representatives of Alameda County Vector Control and Mosquito Abatement Agencies. After the
meeting, the groups agreed that pamphlets would be delivered to those residential areas that border the
many storm water canals in the city.

Additionally, there have been prevention presentations to homeowner's associations and senior groups to
discuss how to prevent the disease. Attached is a list of those groups and areas that have been addressed
in Pleasanton.

FISCAL IMPACT

There is no new fiscal impact for this program. All of the written materials will be provided by
Alameda County Mosquito Abatement and Vector Control. Presentations can be provided to employees
during the course of their normal duties.

Respectfully Submitted,
Fire Chief ~

Nelson Fialho
City Manager

SR:05:I 17 West Nile City Council Report
