THE CITY OF

I'2L£AS?kNTON

6A

City Council
Staff Report

May 3, 2005
Fire Department

SUBJECT

Informational Report Regarding the West Nile Virus Public Education
Program

STAFF RECOMMENDATION:

That the City Council accepts this report and encourages community
awareness towards the prevention of West Nile Disease.

SUMMARY

Recently the Alameda County Vector Control Agency, a Division of the
Alameda County Health Care Agency, briefed the City Council on the issue
of the West Nile Vires, how it is transmitted by mosquitos and what
preventative measures are needed by members of our community. City staff
then met with Vector Control representatives and developed a public and
city employee education program to assist the county in its vector control
efforts.

Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Council:

The West Nile Vires (WNV) has been detected in Alameda County. In 2004, infected birds were tested
and the results were positive that local birds have contracted the disease. This will be the second year
that the vires was found in our county. Vector Control staff know the infestation will be worse this year
as opposed to last year, since the disease cycle peaks in its second year.

To inform and prepare our community, we recommend a three-tiered program that will include the City
of Livermore and the Livermore and Pleasanton School Districts.

The first part of the three-pronged program involves public education program. This program would
inform the public of this disease, its cause, symptoms and treatment and also how to prevent the disease.
The presentation will advise the community on reporting incidents of dead birds and squirrels. These
presentations will be given by representatives of the Alameda Vector Control and Pleasanton Animal

SR:05:I 17 West Nile City Council Report
