pL£ AS&NTON city Council <br /> Staff Report <br /> <br /> March 1,2005 <br /> Deputy City Manager <br /> <br />SUBJECT: AUTORIZATION FOR THE PURCHASE AND ACTIVATION OF <br /> NEXTEL CELLULAR PHONES FOR THE PLEASANTON POLICE <br /> DEPARTMENT. <br /> <br />STAFF RECOMMENDATION: <br /> <br /> Authorize staff to proceed with implementing Ncxtel cellular telephones in <br /> the Pleasanton Police Department and appropriate $22,100 from the <br /> Citizens Option for Public Safety Program (COPS) for the purchase of <br /> phones, car kits and related equipment and activation costs. <br /> <br />SUMMARY: The Pleasanton Police department is pursuing a program of equipping <br /> police officers with cellular telephones to improve efficiency and establish <br /> a level or redundancy to radio communications. The service will be <br /> provided by Nextel communications, Inc., through Campus Wireless, an <br /> authorized Nextcl representative. Service includes cell phones, car kits to <br /> allow officers to utilize and charge the phones hands free while in police <br /> vehicles, and belt clips. Estimated cost of implementing the service is <br /> $22,100. <br /> <br />Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Council: <br /> <br />DISCUSSION <br /> <br />The City utilizes Cingular Wireless for cellular services and SkyTel for paging services. <br />Currently, 29 police employees are assigned cellular phones and all police officers are assigned <br />pagers. The City also maintains an 800 MHz radio system with a radio tower shared with the City <br />of Livermore. Recently, the police department secured Nextel cellular service for five officers to <br />test its capabilities related to direct talkgroups, paging services and radio redundancy.
