pL£AShNTON: , coun .
Staff Report

March 1, 2005
Fire Department

SUBJECT: Weed Abatement Program for 2005

STAFF RECOMMENDATION:
Adopt thc attached resolution that declares weeds, rubbish and refuse on
specified properties constitute a public nuisance, orders the abatement
thereof, and sets a public bearing to hear objections to the proposed
abatement.

SUMMARY: The Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department (LPFD) Weed Abatement
Program is a critical fire prevention program. The goal of the program is to
prevent the loss of life and property due to uncontrolled wildfire in the
urban/wildland interface through a working partnership between property
owners and the LPFD. Fire inspectors evaluate property throughout the
City and identify properties that do not comply with the LPFD's weed
abatement standards. Those parcels that do not comply this year are listed
in an attachment to this staff report. LPFD recommends that the City
Council adopt the attached resolution declaring the weeds and rubbish on
these parcels to be a public nuisance, order the abatement of the weeds and
rubbish and set a public hearing for any objections to the proposed
abatement.

Honorable Mayor and Members of the Council:

BACKGROUND

In the City of Pleasanton, the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department (LPFD) combats fire
hazards resulting from an overgrowth of grasses, weeds, shrubbery and trees through the LPFD
Weed Abatement Program. This program has been established in compliance with Government
Code sections 39560-39588. The LPFD Weed Abatement Program's goal is to establish a fire-
safe community through property owners' voluntary compliance with the LPFD's weed
abatement standards.

SR 05:063
Page 1
