(Pleasanton Municipal Code, 2.34.020)

The Pleasanton Public Library Collection Development Plan for FY 2025/26 is being shared
with the Library Commission for review and input.

RECOMMENDATION
Review and discuss the Pleasanton Public Library Collection Development Plan for FY
2025/26.

BACKGROUND
In November 2023, the City Council approved a Collection Development Policy (Attachment 1)
and an Inclusiveness in Materials Statement (Attachment 2), both developed by the Library
Commission’s Policy Subcommittee and approved by the Library Commission. These
foundational resources, along with usage data and patron input, informed the development of
the first annual Collection Development Plan in 2024. That plan was reviewed by the Library
Commission at their August 1, 2024, meeting. During that presentation, staff provided an
overview of the Library’s physical and digital collections, and commissioners provided
questions and shared feedback.

DISCUSSION
The Collection Development Plan for FY 2025/26 outlines annual goals for the selection and
management of library materials. It includes information about collection development
methodology, promotional efforts, ongoing maintenance, and an overview of the current
collection scope and usage trends.

Tools like this allow the Library to establish goals, align collection decisions with available
funding, and ensure that limited resources are allocated effectively. As budget levels are
finalized and spending priorities shift, staff will provide plan updates to the Library Commission.

EQUITY AND SUSTAINABILITY
Library materials are free to all, and the FY 2025/26 Collection Development Plan continues
the Library’s commitment to maintaining a collection of materials in multiple formats that reflect
the diversity of the Pleasanton community. With the launch of the Library and Recreation
mobile vehicle, Zippy, the Library will build on existing efforts to offer multilingual materials and
inclusive resources through both in-person and outreach services.
