CITYWIDE TURF REDUCTION STUDY
4 / 47 CITY OF PLEASANTON © Copyrighted 2024 Callander Associates
Landscape Architecture, Inc.
INTRODUCTION
On April 20, 2023, CALA and City staff reviewed aerial imagery and GIS data for City parks and
civic properties including the civic center grounds and fire stations 1 and 2. At the meeting, limits
of potential non-functional and non-recreational turf removal were identified for each candidate
site. Based on the outcome of the meeting, the study evaluates twenty-two (22) neighborhood
parks, four (4) community parks and three (3) civic properties. Potential water use reduction was
calculated based on the limits of turf removal depicted for each candidate site. In addition,
estimated construction costs are presented based on two turf replacement scenarios. Aerial
images of each evaluated site with the proposed limits of non-functional and non-recreational
turf removal are also included with areas labeled in square feet.
The potential non-functional and non-recreational turf reduction limits identified in this study are
not final. Turf reduction limits can be altered taking into consideration the City’s needs at the
time of conversion. The purpose of this study is meant to capture the possibilities of non-functional
and non-recreational turf conversion across the City and the associated water savings and
implementation costs.
