<br /> <br /> <br />3-1 <br /> <br />Pleasanton Parks and Recreation Master Plan <br />Section Three – Recreation Programming Recommendations 2014 <br />3.0 RECREATION PROGRAMMING RECOMMENDATIONS <br /> <br />Pleasanton’s Community Services Department (parks & <br />recreation) is striving to develop and implement accessible, <br />high‐quality, value‐based programs that encourage healthy <br />lifestyles and celebrate the community. The Department <br />provides and manages a vast array of recreation, social and <br />cultural programs and events for all segments of the <br />Pleasanton community. This section analyzes the current <br />programs and services offered, summarize the needs <br />identification tools, and identifies the priority recreation <br />program needs in the City. Recommendations are provided <br />to address the priority program needs that were identified <br />through quantitative and qualitative methods. <br /> <br />3.1 Recreation Benefits <br /> <br />The availability of a wide‐range of recreation programs and leisure opportunities is a major component <br />to the quality of life in any community. Recreation programs benefit individuals, families, businesses, <br />neighborhoods and households of all ages, income levels, cultures, and abilities by creating <br />environments that engage people in positive activities. Recreation programs and services that are <br />developed, designed, and delivered effectively can provide the following benefits: <br /> <br /> Strengthen community image and sense of place <br /> Support economic development <br /> Strengthen safety and security <br /> Promote health and wellness <br /> Foster human development <br /> Increase cultural unity <br /> Protect environmental resources <br />• Facilitate community problem solving <br />• Provide recreational experiences <br /> <br />Recreation pursuits range from organized activities such as sports, classes, youth activities, family <br />programming, and community events to more passive endeavors such as picnics, hiking, cycling, and <br />walking. Effective recreation programs promote the positive use of leisure time and a lifelong <br />commitment to a healthy lifestyle, personal development, and a strong community. <br /> <br />In the community wide telephone survey, Pleasanton residents identified their top priorities for <br />recreation programs and facilities that support the quality of life in Pleasanton, including: <br /> <br /> Opportunities for self‐discovery and group interaction through arts & crafts programs <br /> Opportunities to gather and socialize with others utilizing community facilities <br /> Opportunities for social interaction, expression and community cohesiveness through performing <br />arts and music programs <br /> <br />Highlights <br />The largest numbers of program <br />participants are those enrolled in <br />aquatics, tennis, and arts programs, <br />as well as programs for seniors <br />Community events are well <br />attended and popular <br />Seniors programs, tennis programs, <br />arts & crafts, aquatics, fitness, and <br />performing arts were the highest <br />identified needs in Pleasanton <br />Recommendations include offering <br />a wide variety of classes and <br />programs for all ages and abilities <br />
