<br /> <br />2-13 <br />Pleasanton Parks and Recreation Master Plan <br />Section Two – Recreation Facility Needs Assessment 2014 <br /> <br />2.8.1 Community Outreach <br /> <br />The community outreach portion of the Needs Assessment provided a number of opportunities to <br />obtain perspective from residents, users of facilities and programs, and providers of facilities and <br />programs. <br /> <br />Another needs identification tool included in the community outreach effort, the Citywide Telephone <br />Survey, is discussed separately in Section 2.8.2. The information received from each of these sources <br />has been included in the overall prioritization of needs and recommendations. A brief summary of each <br />community input is provided below, and the complete summary is included in the Appendix document. <br /> <br />The entire Master Plan process had been guided by an appointed Steering Committee composed of City <br />leaders, business people, community activists, and representatives of Pleasanton’s community groups <br />and the Parks and Recreation Commission. The Steering Committee met monthly to preview materials, <br />provide guidance to the staff and consultant team and to review products and reports. A total of ten <br />meetings were held, starting in October 2012 through the final stage of production of this report, <br />representing a significant investment in time and energy to support the creation of this Master Plan. <br /> <br />Community Workshop #1 – Community Characteristics and Issues <br /> <br />The first community workshop was held on Monday, October 22, 2012. Forty (40) residents attended <br />the workshop. The purpose of Workshop #1 was to identify what the residents of Pleasanton like about <br />the City’s character, parks and recreation programs, and identify what could be improved. <br /> <br />According to the workshop participants, the most important community characteristics are (in order of <br />importance): <br />1. Small town – sense of community <br />2. Safe <br />3. Schools <br />4. Parks, programs and facilities <br />5. Well maintained <br /> <br />The most important issues that the workshop participants felt impacted Pleasanton’s community <br />characteristics are (in order of importance): <br />1. Growth <br />2. Lack of funding <br />3. Changing demographics <br />4. Lack of lighted sport fields <br />5. Lack of all‐weather sport fields <br /> <br />When asked what role parks, recreation and community services play in addressing the issues and <br />supporting the community characteristics, they agreed to the following priority list (in order of priority): <br />1. Partnerships <br />2. Cost Benefit <br />3. Evaluate changing needs <br />4. Affordability of programs
