Frank Baum. It was purchased by resident Dorothy Broderson and offered as a
donation to the City of Pleasanton. The Library Commission and the Civic Arts Commission
have reviewed the piece and recommend that it be accepted for temporary placement at the
Pleasanton Public Library.

RECOMMENDATION
Accept the donation of the temporary public artwork The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Book Bench
at the Pleasanton Public Library.

BACKGROUND
Following the Bound for Books public art exhibit in the Town of Danville, Pleasanton resident
Dorothy Broderson won a public auction bid for The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Book Bench, at a
cost of $3,600. Ms. Broderson contacted the City with a request to donate public artwork for
installation at the Pleasanton Public Library. In accordance with the Pleasanton Municipal
Code (PMC) Chapter 13.16 Art in Public Places, Library commissioners and Civic
Arts commissioners reviewed the proposed donation in consultation with City departments
and provided a recommendation of acceptance.
PMC Chapter 13.16.070 outlines the process for gifts and loans of public art displayed in public
places:
A. Civic Arts Commission shall review any proposed donation or loan of public art for artistic
merit, site appropriateness, liability questions, and installation and maintenance costs and
considerations. The review shall include consultations with all affected city departments.

B. Upon completion of its review the Civic Arts Commission shall make its recommendation
for acceptance or rejection of the offer to the city council.

C. A donor who wishes to make an offer of a gift of public art shall provide for review:
1. Documented materials for the artwork being offered for donation including
photographs, slides, renderings, descriptions of size, weight, medium, title, year of
creation, and a resume of the artist, if possible.
2. Documentation establishing the donor as the clear and unencumbered title holder of
the artwork.
