After m any m o nths o f addr e s s ing the pending financial deficit with r eductions in all ar eas , e xcept for tho s e mandated by the s tate, it is clear that Pleas anton ne eds to r ais e s ignificant r es our ces to co ver thes e unfunded cos ts over the ne xt 10 ye ar s . I appr eciate thos e of you who ar e letting the voter s decide now that yo u have wor ked s o diligently to me et this cr is is hea d o n a nd not po s tpone this actio n. Mr. B eaudin and S taff ha ve been ver y tr ans par ent and infor m ative about the C ity’s budget co ncer ns and the pr opo s ed s olutions over the pas t many months . S taff m em ber s have been enga ging the com m unity in C ity s pons or ed wor ks hops , at mee tings with pr ivate gr o ups and in people’s pr ivate ho m es for s ever al m onths . I lea r ned much fr om dir ectly s pe aking with S taff who ar e the mos t we ll info r me d a bout the complexities o f the City’s budget about the ne xt s teps needed to m eet the cr is is as s oo n a s po s s ible in the upco ming election cycle . Taking into cons ider atio n the budget co mplexities and the unfo r e s een econo mic im pacts on r evenue facing P leas anto n, I a ppla ud yo ur willingne s s to m ake decis io n that ar en’t bas ed o n po litical as pir atio ns but allo w fo r the voter s to decide if the s a les tax is the bes t s o lutio n. Like s o many s ur r ounding co mmunities who face s im ilar budget deficits , I believe the s ales tax optio n is the bes t a nd mo s t impactful way to maintain the quality o f life and s er vice s we have com e to expect in o ur town.
