The City Council will be
meeting on March 5 to receive an update on the UFMP and review the draft resolution
to amend the Tree Preservation Ordinance.

Over the coming months, staff will be working with the UFMP consultant to:
• Finalize tree inventory: February – March
• Create the first draft of the canopy cover analysis: February – March
• Develop the first draft of the UFMP: March – July
• Provide additional public outreach: August – September
• Adopt UFMP: November/December

As the City progresses with the UFMP, staff will be looking for future events to obtain
input from younger generations on the draft master plan. A significant challenge that we
are facing is to educate the public about the importance of our urban forest and why we
should be protecting trees and planning for the future.

EQUITY AND SUSTAINABILITY
The creation of the UFMP was specified under the CAP 2.0 action items. The urban
forestry goal of the CAP 2.0 is to increase tree canopy and native habitat to reduce and
store carbon emissions, reduce the impacts of climate change, and create a healthier
environment. Modification to the City’s Municipal Code was specified in the CAP 2.0 to
require climate-adapted plantings, facilitate tree planting throughout the city, and
discourage tree removal.

The public outreach regarding the UFMP and tree preservation ordinance update will
help educate the community about the importance of the urban forest.

STRATEGIC PLAN ALIGNMENT
Creation of the UFMP and the amendment to the Municipal Code's tree preservation
chapter advances the ONE Pleasanton strategic plan goal of Investing in our
Environment, Strategy 6 - Continue to implement priority items from the CAP 2.0 and
lead by example on environmental sustainability. The amended Municipal Code will
provide more clarity regarding tree removal penalties and costs, which provides a
funding mechanism for tree planting projects and will help maintain the fiscal
sustainability of the forest. The UFMP and the amended Ordinance should lead to staff
efficiency, investments in our environment's health, and help protect the City from
extreme weather events and climate change. The benefits of our healthy urban forest
will serve residents for generations to come.
