Playground Renovation (Minor Renovation) Consistent with the City’s ongoing playground replacement plan, the City replaced the play areas near the community garden at Val Vista Community Park (one for two- to five-year-old children and one play area for five- to twelve-year-old children). ▪ In August 2022, staff advertised a Request For Qualifications (RFQ) for the Design, Supply, and Installation of Replacement Play Apparatus for Val Vista Community Park ▪ Four playground design companies submitted qualifications packages for the Val Vista playground renovation project on August 31, 2022 ▪ Miracle Playsystems was chosen as the preferred design company in September ▪ Two conceptual designs were created and shared with the public for feedback at a community meeting and through an online survey in November 2023 ▪ The conceptual plans and public input were shared with the Parks and Recreation Commission on December 7, 2023. The Commission directed staff to proceed with the option preferred by the public with some modifications to address public comments ▪ On January 7, 2023, the City Council approved the design with updates per the recommendation of the Parks and Recreation Commission and awarded the contract to Miracle Playsystems ▪ Construction began on June 5, 2023 ❖ Construction was completed in July 2023, the City conducted its final inspection of the project on July 27, and the contractor completed the construction punch list in early August ❖ On October 17, the City Council accepted the $332,770 playground project for Val Vista Community Park. 200 Old Bernal Avenue Landscape Renovation (Minor Renovation) To complement the improvements to the Council Chamber and to be consistent with the City’s goal to reduce water use and lead by example, the City sheet mulched a portion of the front lawn of 200 Old Bernal Avenue and removed and replaced the other lawn and planting areas with primarily native and all low-water-use plants and a new more efficient irrigation system. ❖ On October 18, 2023, staff completed draft plans for converting the lawn and high-water-use plants in front of 200 Old Bernal Avenue to low-water-use and mostly native plants ❖ On November 3, staff met with the City’s landscape contractor, Terra Landscape, to discuss the project and review construction details and schedule
