24 <br />twelve (12) months actual service. The City Council may by resolution establish a longer <br />probationary period for specified classes. <br /> <br />18.2 Notification Requirements <br /> <br /> A probationary employee and his/her department shall be notified by the Human Resources <br />Department of the expiration of the employee's probationary period forty-five (45) days in <br />advance of said date. <br /> <br /> Within twenty-one (21) days prior to the expiration date of the probationary period, the Chief <br />of Police shall file with the Human Resources Manager a statement as to whether or not the <br />probationary employee shall be retained in the position. <br /> <br /> In order that the probationary employee may be made aware of his/her progress toward both <br />learning and fulfilling the duties and responsibilities of his/her position, he/she shall receive a <br />bi-monthly performance evaluation. <br /> <br /> The bi-monthly performance evaluations shall be made in writing and shall be conducted by the <br />employee's immediate supervisor and division commander. <br /> <br /> If a probationary employee is off work due to a leave of absence, sick leave or disability leave <br />or any combination thereof for a period exceeding thirty (30) consecutive calendar days, said <br />employee's probationary period shall be extended automatically by the length of said leave. <br />The employee shall be notified in writing of any extension. <br /> <br />18.3 Extension of Probationary Period <br /> <br /> The probationary period may be extended once by the Personnel Officer for a period not to <br />exceed ninety (90) days in order to further evaluate the performance of the probationary <br />employee. The employee shall be notified in writing of any extension. <br /> <br />18.4 Rejection of Probationary Employee - Original Appointment <br /> <br /> The City Manager may terminate a probationary employee during the probationary period upon <br />written notice without right of appeal in any manner by the probationary employee. Any such <br />employee shall receive fifteen (15) calendar days pay. <br /> <br />18.5 Rejection of Probationary Employee - Promotional Appointment <br /> <br /> Any employee rejected during the probationary period following a promotional appointment or <br />at the conclusion of the probation period shall be reinstated to a position in the class from <br />which he/she was promoted. <br /> <br />Section 19. Promotion <br /> <br /> Promotional or open-promotional examinations may be conducted whenever in the opinion of <br />the Personnel Officer (City Manager) the needs of the service require. Only employees who <br />meet the requirements set forth in the examination announcements may compete in promotional <br />examinations. <br />
